SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Norwich University men's ice hockey team opened up its 2013-14 ECAC East league play with dominant 5-0 victory over St. Michael's College on Friday night at Cairns Arena.
Senior forward Chris Duszynski continued his torrid start to the season, netting two goals to pace the Cadets' offense in the victory. He now has five goals in two games so far.
Classmate Shane Gorman had a goal and three assists, and junior Corey Hale and sophomore Ryan Whitell also scored. Senior Travis Janke added three helpers, and junior Matic Marinsek posted four saves to pick up the victory. Janke has a team-leading six assists so far as he continues his ascent up the NU all-time scoring chart.
St. Michael's junior Dave Donzanti made a career-high 37 saves for the Purple Knights before sophomore Michael Comitini had nine in 12:30 of relief.
Donzanti made four stops in the opening five minutes of a scoreless game before Saint Michael's earned a power-play opportunity just 5:08 into their season, but the hosts were unable to send any shots on goal. Three more Donzanti stops were followed by a pair of Duszynski goals just 2:44 apart, at 9:55 and 12:39. Gorman and Janke assisted each.
With Norwich up 2-0 during the second period, the Purple Knights headed on a power play at 8:15, but Gorman took a Janke pass and netted a short-handed marker at 9:06 to create a 3-0 lead for the Cadets. Whitell and Hale tacked on power-play markers 4:21 apart in the third period, at 3:09 and 7:30, with Hale's coming during a 5-on-3 advantage.
