Rutland, Vt. - In its season debut, the Castleton Men's Ice Hockey team skated away with a 4-2 victory, downing the Southern Maine Huskies to open their 2013-2014 campaign. Freshmen Corbin Marcotte and Chris Stachiw each notched a goal and an assist in their first ever game for the green and white to give new head coach Steve Moffat a win in his Castleton debut.
In front of a raucous crowd of over 1,000 fans, Castleton took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period. The stand erupted as Marcotte found Stachiw for a goal. Stachiw received the puck at the left point and wristed it high-stick side, beating the USM goalkeeper to put the Spartans ahead.
In the second period, Castleton added onto their lead when Stachiw returned the favor to Marcotte. The forward ripped a slapper from the high left point that found net on the glove side. The tally put the Spartans ahead 2-0 with just under 12 minutes left in the second period.
Southern Maine got on the board with a counter-attack just two minutes later. The Huskies attacked the zone on a power play and Todd Bannerman found some space. He collected a a pass from Ryan Seward and buried it to bring the Huskies back within one.
In the third period, Castleton extended their lead yet again when senior Kyle Richards capitalized on a USM defensive mistake. The forward intercepted the loose puck in the Huskies' zone and beat Dylan Wells on a deke to net the eventual game-winning goal and put Castleton ahead 3-1.
The Huskies made it close with a goal from Zach Klippenstein with just over five minutes remaining in the half. Seward received the puck near the left circle in the Castleton zone and found Klippenstein driving goalwards for the one-timer to make the score 3-2. That was as close as the Huskies would draw though as Castleton put the nail in the coffin with an empty-net goal from Colin Murray with 31 seconds left to make it 4-2.
Erick Cinotti picked up where he left off last season, performing well in net for the Spartans. The senior made 24 saves in his first win of the year. Dylan Wells turned away 29 Castleton shots, but took the loss as the Huskies were outshot 33-26.
Castleton improves to 1-0-0 with their opening season win. They will return to action on Saturday when they host University of New England at 4:00pm.
