MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - While a Vermont hospital has ordered mandatory yearly influenza vaccinations for staff and volunteers, most appear to be sticking with a policy of making flu shots voluntary but strongly encouraged.
Mount Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor announced recently it would require employees to have flu shots by Dec. 1. Exceptions can be made for medical or religious reasons.
The mandatory policy follows the example of two nearby New Hampshire hospitals, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and New London Hospital.
But most Vermont hospitals say they're sticking with a voluntary vaccination policy for now. Some ask that staff members who don't have flu shots wear surgical masks when meeting with patients.
