RUTLAND, Vt. -- Rice took advantage of Lyndon turnovers to build a 20 point third quarter lead then held on to beat Lyndon 27-21 in the Division Two football state championship game Saturday at Rutland High School.
It was the second straight title for the Green Knights and third in the last four years.
Rice quarterback Chris Jansen ran for two touchdowns, threw for another and and the defense forced six Viikings tunovers in the victory.
Lyndon, searching for just it's second state title in school history, took a 7-0 lead on a Deryck Colburn 45 yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
Rice answers with 27 straight points, a pair of touchdown runs from Jansen, including a 45 yarder, and a 75 yard touchdown pass from Jansen to Tommy Fitzgerald to take a 27-7 third quarter lead.
The Vikings battled back and Davis Guyer's touchdown run cuts the lead to 27-21.
But Rice wouldn't let it slip away...as the Knights pick off a James Shufelt heave in the final moments to seal the win and the state title for the Green Knights.
It's Rice's seconds straight Division Two title and third in the last four years.
