Under the lights at Alumni Field. A battle of the top two teams in Division I as undefeated No.1 seed Middlebury matched up with No. 2 seed one-loss South Burlington for the State Championship.
A rematch of the Tigers 42-20 week 7 win. Rebels learning from their mistakes and striking first tonight. Hunter Riehle to Jeremy Clements. He crosses the goal line for the score. 6-0 South Burlington.
Middlebury answers with a score in the second to go ahead 7-6. They have a chance to add to it but quarterback Austin Robinson is picked off by Paul Valgoi to end a promising drive.
The Tigers won't make the same mistake twice though. Right before half, Robinson connects with Cullen Hathaway for the short td strike. 13-6 Middlebury at the break.
If the Rebels were going to answer, they'd have to do it with star running back Tanner Contois who did not play in the second half due to an undisclosed injury.
The blow would be too much to overcome against the red-hot Tigers. Middlebury's defense pitches a second half shutout and then Robinson goes to work. Two impressive touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters to seal it as he finishes with four on the night.
The perfect season is complete for Dennis Smith and the Middlebury Tigers. They win it 26-6 over South Burlington for their first DI State Championship since 2002.
