The Veterans Affairs hospital in White River Junction is leading a national study of two methods for treating post traumatic stress disorder. It's a $10 million study that's being tested in 17 different locations.
The techniques are called cognitive processing. They are used to help patients logically figure out they are not in danger. And Prolonged Exposure which is meant to safely re-experience emotional trauma until the memories become manageable.
Investigators hope this study will give therapists evidence-based guidelines based on demographics and other patient information.
