1,500 Vermont National Guard soldiers deployed to Afghanistan 3 years ago. Six servicemen with ties to Vermont died and many more were wounded.
The military vehicle Sgt. Ed Matayka was riding in hit a bomb buried under the road. The blast wounded four other Vermont soldiers and killed the driver. Sgt. Matayka lost both of his legs, suffered a massive stroke and doctors did not expect him to live, but he is now recovering in San Antonio, Texas.
