New Hampshire executive councilor has died

BATH, N.H. -

New Hampshire's longest-serving member of the Executive Council has passed away.

Ray Burton was first elected to the council in 1977. He's been re-elected every two years ever since. But he recently announced he would not seek another term. The Republican had been suffering from kidney cancer and died at his home in Bath early Tuesday morning.

Burton was a tireless advocate for New Hampshire's North Country.

"He did an incredible amount of work for all of the cities and towns, all of the people in his district. It didn't matter whether you were a Democrat or a Republican. He was all about helping people and he helped a lot of people," said Karen Liot Hill, a Lebanon city councilor.

A special election will be set to fill Burton's seat.

Ray Burton was 74.
