Why would the Burlington Fire Department purposely set fire to a home? The New North End house was set ablaze Wednesday morning so firefighters could engage in a real-life situation with hands-on training.
Fire Chief Seth Lasker says the opportunity for those who protect the city to use their equipment and skills to practice putting out a real fire is unique.
"This is priceless, honestly. We do not have a training facility. It's rare that we get homes donated to us, it's even rarer that we get a home donated to us that we can burn that doesn't have buildings immediately adjacent," Lasker said.
Officials say the home was set to be demolished and the owners volunteered to have the fire department use the building for training.
