Composting increases in Vermont

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

More Vermont trash collectors are accepting restaurant, college and hospital food scraps.

These leftovers are being composted in an effort to comply with new state laws. Last year the Legislature passed a law requiring statewide recycling by 2015. The law also mandates no food scraps in landfills by 2020.

This is expected to boost Vermont's recycling and composting rate from 30 to 60 percent.
