Planned Parenthood PAC to pay fine for Vt. campaign finance violations

Posted: Updated:

Planned Parenthood's political action committee has agreed to pay a $30,000 fine penalty for campaign finance violations.

The Vermont attorney general's office says Planned Parenthood failed to comply with political committee reporting requirements in connection with $119,000 in ads it ran during the 2010 campaign opposing Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Dubie.

Planned Parenthood argued that it was operating as a super PAC-- making independent expenditures-- and so is exempt from state oversight. But the AG says the PAC has also made direct contributions to candidates, so it can't claim to be independent.
