Rutland police officer honored after knife attack

Posted: Updated:

RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont police officer who survived a knife attack in a holding area of the Rutland police department is being recognized for his actions.

Rutland City Police Officer Damon Nguyen was recently awarded his department's Medal of Valor for his actions during the assault last Dec. 27.

Nguyen was honored at a ceremony where a number of other officers received other awards.

A video of the assault played in court showed a woman being questioned about allegations she used a credit card that didn't belong to her approaching the seated Nguyen from behind.

Nguyen suffered a 2-inch cut to his throat.

The woman is facing attempted murder charges and is being held without bail.

Nguyen tells the Rutland Herald he's glad he's not dead.
