Freshman Kristina White scored a career-high 21 points and tied the TD Bank Classic record for most 3-pointers in a game with six, to lead the Vermont Catamounts to a 68-44 victory over North Florida in women's basketball action on the first day of UVM's own TD Bank Classic at Patrick Gymnasium on Friday.
Vermont picks up its first win of the year in its home opener to improve to 1-2, while North Florida falls to 2-3 on the season.
White gave Vermont its first lead of the game with a 3-pointer at the 15:31 mark of the second half and the Catamounts extended their lead to five, 43-38, four minutes later.
UVM used a decisive 20-2 run, sparked by a 3-pointer by Niki Taylor over a seven-minute span, to allow the Catamounts to open up a 23-point advantage, 63-40, with 4:18 remaining in the game. UVM would maintain the comfortable lead to pick up the victory.
The Catamounts also clamped down on defense in the second half, limiting North Florida to just five field goals and 15.6 percent shooting in the second stanza. UNF finished the game shooting 19 percent from the floor.
Vermont scored the first basket of the game and North Florida responded with a 14-1 run to take a 14-3 lead. White halted the run with back-to-back 3-pointers, allowing UVM to climb back within five, 14-9 with 10:44 remaining in the half. The Catamounts were able to knot the score up three different times in the final 2:24 of the period, but Destinee Smith made two free throws with 18 seconds remaining in the half to give North Florida a 27-25 lead at the break.
Kylie Butler and Taylor combined for 26 points off the bench for the Catamounts. Butler netted 12 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, while also adding three assists. Taylor chipped in 14 points.
Smith paced North Florida with a team-high 11 points and added three assists.
The TD Bank Classic continues on Saturday (Nov. 23). Siena and North Florida will square off in the consolation game at 5 p.m. and will be followed by Wisconsin Green Bay and Vermont in the championship game at 7 p.m. UWGB defeated Siena 63-52 in the opening game of the TD Bank Classic.
