Katie MacSorley scored two goals to lead Northeastern past Vermont 2-1 Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Hockey East action.
After a scoreless first period in which the Catamounts outshot Northeastern 8-4 MacSorley netted her seventh goal of the season 25 seconds into the second frame. Kelly Wallace fed a drop pass to MacSorley who one-timed a shot from the slot past Vermont goaltender Roxanne Douville (19 saves).
At the 6:30 mark of the second period MacSorley made it her second two-goal effort of the season. She took a breakout pass from Wallace and beat a Vermont defender to the net before flipping a quick backhand shot past Douville.
In the third period the Catamounts pressed the Huskies outshooting them 13-4. Vermont got on the board during a five-on-three power play opportunity. The Catamounts pulled their goalie to add to their advantage. 23 seconds into the advantage Amanda Pelkey converted from right in front of the net to score her team leading 10th goal of the season. Dayna Colang and Brittany Zuback earned assists on Pelkey's 19th point of the season.
Pelkey's tally was also her 53rd point at Vermont, surpassing Emily Walsh (2009-13) as the Catamounts leader in all-time point production. The junior and Vermont native is second in Hockey East scoring.
In the final seven minutes of the game the Catamounts could not solve Northeastern netminder Chloe Desjardins again. She made 31 saves as she won her sixth game of the season.
"Credit to Northeastern for making the most of their chances," said head coach Jim Plumer. "Our third period was our best effort but playing one strong period isn't enough. We continually work to play a consistent, urgent game and that will be our focus tomorrow."
The Catamounts will conclude the two-game series on Saturday afternoon with a 4 p.m.
