Vermont has appointed its first search and rescue coordinator.

The Vermont Department of Public Safety and Vermont State Police say, Neil Van Dyke will coordinate the training and continued development of local, county, and state search and rescue teams.

Officials say Van Dyke was a founding member of Stowe Mountain Rescue in 1980.

As the team's leader for over 25 years, he has participated in nearly 1,000 search and rescue missions.
