Small businesses holiday message: Shop local

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

As the holiday shopping season gets underway, local retailers are asking Vermonters to spend their money at their stores.

Small businesses joined state politicians to talk about the challenges they face in an era of big box stores and Internet options for buying gifts. They say more and more people pop into local retailers to use as a showroom, then simply order the item online.

"We've said a lot of buying local -- especially with Vermont. We all buy food... We like to buy food that's local because it tastes good. I'd just like to say that when you shop local, it feels good," said Eric Bigglestone with Capital Stationers in Montpelier.

"More than half of consumers have already started shopping before Thanksgiving. In the past we've seen many people wait until Thanksgiving as kind of the symbolic day when you start your shopping," said Tasha Wallis with the Vermont Retail Association.

Local retailers are trying to entice those people with special shopping days like Flannel Friday in downtown Montpelier and Small Business Saturday statewide.
