Saranac Lake woman charged with murder

SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. -

The New York State Police Violent Crime Team has been called in to investigate a murder in the village of Saranac Lake.

The woman suspected of killing a man is behind bars, but police won't elaborate on their relationship.

Angela Ball, 29, tried to duck our cameras as she shuffled into the village courthouse late Monday night. The Saranac Lake woman is charged with second-degree murder.

"We received a dispatch notice from State Police to respond to a complaint involving a possible assault," said Chief Bruce Nason of the Saranac Lake Village Police Department.

But police say when they got to the apartment house on Morris Way, in the village of Saranac Lake, Ward Guy Wilbur, 65, was already dead.

"There was a stabbing and there was also blunt force trauma inflicted upon Mr. Wilbur and that's what led ultimately led to his death," said Franklin County District Attorney Derek Champagne.

The New York State Police Violent Crime Team was called in to help with the investigation. Police say Ball was arrested shortly after they arrived on the scene, but they would not comment on a motive or discuss how she knew the victim.

"This was not random and we're comfortable with the information that we received that we have the person responsible and the public, their safety is not in jeopardy," said Chief Nason.

During Monday night's arraignment the judge allowed Ball to make one phone call. In open court she told the person on the other end of the line:

"I have been charged with some crimes... Ward attacked me. It looks like it was my fault. He attacked me several times. And it came to blows."

As she left the courthouse she continued to tell reporters, "I was attacked by Ward several times. Mentally, spiritually... He tried to steal my soul."

Ball did not enter a plea. Because she is facing a felony charge, that must be done in county court. The judge ordered her held without bail and set a preliminary hearing for Friday.

If convicted, Ball could face 25 years to life in prison.

According to police records, in the last year she has been arrested for drunk driving and possession of marijuana.
