"Well, I think it's a real shame," Garry Hoffman said.

Neighbors like Hoffman say on such a quiet street in Saranac Lake, one of the last things you'd expect to happen happened. Angela Ball, 29, has been accused of killing Ward Wilber, 65.

"Especially in a small town like this you don't really expect that kind of violence," Hoffman said.

Hoffman lives across the street from the crime scene. He says he's surprised to hear a murder occurred just a few hundred feet from his front door.

"I've always told my friends and family that it's a nice quiet neighborhood and it's kind of shocking that it happened," Hoffman said.

Angela Ball allegedly stabbed and beat Ward Wilbur to death. Police say the two had a romantic relationship that ended about a year ago. And investigators are gathering evidence.

"We've seized some clothing of Ms. Ball, we've seized a knife which was recovered at the residence and we have also seized an excess of 100 small, essentially starter marijuana plants," Franklin County Prosecutor Derek Champagne said.

Police say the suspect was the one who made the 911 call, and the DA said the victim's wounds were "catastrophic."

"Bad things can happen anywhere," Hoffman said. "Hopefully it's something that won't happen again at all or for a long time."

A preliminary hearing for Ball is set for Friday at 1 p.m. at the Saranac Lake Village Court.

Investigators will get details of the autopsy report Tuesday night.
