The Claremont Savings Bank on Maple Avenue was closed earlier than usual Tuesday. That's because at about 10:40 a.m. a masked gunman entered the bank demanding money. Tellers handed over an undisclosed amount of cash.
"The suspect fled on foot from the bank over to the parking lot at Moody Park and we believe entered a vehicle and fled from the area," Claremont Police Chief Alex Scott said.
The man was dressed in cargo pants, black shoes and a dark barn jacket. He was also wearing what appeared to be a wedding band.
As officers responded to the scene, they got another possible clue-- a dull gray or silver-colored SUV racing away from the scene.
"There was a call reporting a motor vehicle complaint for a vehicle on Maple Avenue traveling at a very high rate of speed, actually passing cars on the double yellow in the area of the Maple Avenue School," Scott said.
Tuesday's robbery comes just six days after a stickup in Lebanon. Again, a lone white man wearing a mask and brandishing a gun. In that case, it's believed the suspect also fled on foot to a nearby car.
Witnesses got a good look and were able to give a description to police.
Reporter Adam Sullivan: Any reason to believe that the two robberies are connected?
Chief Alex Scott: At this point in time we certainly don't have enough information to make a connection, but we are obviously looking at those similarities and we have already contacted the Lebanon Police Department and we will be reviewing their information and we will be reviewing our information to see if we can make any connections.
Anyone with any information on either robbery is encouraged to contact police.
Late Tuesday afternoon, police also released surveillance photos of a hat and ring the suspect in the Claremont case had.
