BURLINGTON, Vt. -- During games this season he's been under fire, but UVM freshman goalie Mike Santaguida has been on fire recently including a 39 save performance Saturday against Umass for the first shutout of his career.
"Hopefully the first of many.", said Santaguida Tuesday. "I think that's a result of where we've come as a team defensively."
Santaguida was thrown into the mix right from the opening weekend starting in place of an injured Brody Hoffman.
"When you have a guy like Hoff go down with an injury early on and to have a freshman that has to start at North Dakota and carry the ball I think he's done a tremendous job and he can continue to get better and better.", said head coach Kevin Sneddon.
Communication the biggest difference between then and now.
"In certain situations when I play the puck, the D now knows where to go.", said Santaguida. "We've done a good job of understanding that yeah, guys are going to get shots, but we have to give them low percentage chances and that's something that me and the D have been talking about."
And now that Hoffman has returned, it sets up a one-two punch between the pipes with Hoffman starting the first game of the weekend and Santaguida going in game number two.
"We just a have a lot of trust in that position right now, It's great to see.", said Sneddon.
"At least from my point of view, we've definitely given the team the ability to win every single night.", said Santaguida.
Most coaches who start the season playing two goalies will eventually pick one and ride him through the stretch. But like I said, that's most coaches.
"If they're both playing excellent than I think we'd keep it going unless we had to make a clear distinction between the two.", said Santaguida.
It's a position the team is in thanks to Mike Santaguida saving the start of the season.
