It's a project to keep Vermonters warm and it came about because of stolen logs.
U.S. Forest Service officials say they've seized more than 20 cords of suitable firewood in recent months, allegedly taken in log-length form illegally from the Green Mountain National Forest in Bennington County.
Police are still investigating, but rather than letting the wood rot, the feds are partnering with Vermont Fuel Assistance and Corrections.
Individuals on probation and parole in Bennington County are cutting, splitting, stacking and preparing the firewood.
It will all be distributed locally to families who may not be eligible for heating assistance but are still struggling to pay their heating bills.
