Youth drug treatment gets big boost in part of Vt.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Drug abuse treatment programs for youths and young adults in Vermont's Chittenden and Washington counties are in line for a major boost in funding.

Centerpoint Adolescent Treatment Services, with sites in Winooski and South Burlington, and Washington County Youth Services, based in Montpelier, will share a $3.8 million federal grant with the Vermont Health Department, which will coordinate the grant.

Centerpoint Director Mitch Barron tells the Burlington Free Press the funds will focus not just on the growing heroin and opiate addiction problem in the state, but on marijuana and alcohol issues for young people.

He says Vermont ranks number one in underage alcohol use, underage marijuana use, 18-25 year-old marijuana use and 15-25 year-old binge drinking.
