WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. (AP) - A Rhode Island man charged with being under the influence of drugs and alcohol and causing a fatal crash in western Massachusetts has been held without bail.
The North Adams Transcript reports that William Lowe of Pawtucket, R.I., pleaded not guilty Monday to charges including motor vehicle homicide by operating under the influence and speeding.
Police say the 34-year-old Lowe had an open beer and was speeding in his SUV at about 10:30 a.m. Nov. 24 in Williamstown when he crossed the center line and struck a car driven by 64-year-old Lawrence George of Pownal, Vt.
George died at the scene. Lowe and a passenger were hospitalized.
Lowe says he skidded on ice.
Lowe was held on $25,000 bail in the Williamstown case, but had bail revoked for a prior OUI arrest.
