Police: Woman killed in fire at northern NY home

Posted: Updated:

Police and firefighters responded to the call about the fire in Moriah Tuesday morning as fast as they could.

"At 5:04 a.m., Essex County 911 received a report of a structure fire here on Dugway Road in Moriah," N.Y. State Police Capt. John Tibbetts said.

The house was engulfed by the time fire crews arrived on the scene, and it was several hours before they were able to find the body of Sierra Daha, 22.

"When they arrived on the scene, two residents had been escorted out by a passer-by. There was one subject that remained in the residence. She was located deceased on the second floor," Tibbetts said.

The two who escaped the inferno unharmed were Damien Sprague, 20, and Mary Daha, who police believe is the grandmother of the deceased. Police say they do not know what caused the fire, but they have opened a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire. It's expected to take several days to complete.

"At this time we are currently interviewing witnesses and anyone else who may have been in the area this morning for this fire," Tibbetts said.

Daha's remains have been moved to Albany for an autopsy, expected to be finished Wednesday. No arrests or charges have been made.
