New rules for recycling and composting

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Vermonters recycle more than a third of their waste, but lawmakers think more should be done.

Act 148 is a new law that mandates more recycling.

In 2014 - large generators of food waste, such as hospitals and manufacturers will be required to recycle.

In 2015 - household materials like newspaper and milk jugs will be banned from landfills.

In 2016 - leaves, grass and other yard waste will be banned from landfills.

In 2020 - Everyone must compost, with food waste being banned from landfills.

Governor Peter Shumlin signed the law last year.

Deb Markowitz is the secretary of the Vt. Natural Resources Agency. She's in charge of making this all happen. She appeared on The :30 to tell us more.
