Vt. cutting greenhouse gas emissions, but still shy of goals

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The state of Vermont is making progress on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but is still shy of its goals.

Back in 2006, the Vermont Legislature set a goal of reducing the state's emissions 25 percent by 2012, 50 percent by 2028, and 75 percent by 2050.

Back in 1990, Vermont emitted more than 8 million metric tons of greenhouse gasses.

Natural Resources Secretary Deb Markowitz says a new report now shows emissions down slightly in 2010, and again in 2011. She says the state needs to redouble its efforts to reach its goals.
