It's a sure sign the holiday season is here. The Vt. Statehouse Christmas tree is ready to be lit. This year it's a tall and narrow balsam fir. And it's one of the tallest trees ever, topping off at about 40 feet. That's 5-feet taller than last year's tree. It was donated by a retired Christmas tree grower in Waitsfield, Dennis Bache.
The holiday tradition was accompanied by song. The Kurn Hattin school choir made the 95-mile trip up from Westminster to perform. It's a year-round residential home for 105 kids with difficult lives; they can be homeless, living in poverty or abused. The goal of the school-- let kids be kids and learn and grow in a safe place.
With that, it was time for Gov. Peter Shumlin to flip the switch, with a little help, and light up the Vermont night. A bright show, spreading smiles and making the season pop.
