Once upon a time, Steve McDonald dreamed of opening a bookstore, and so he turned fiction into fact. He says he's not too worried about opening a used bookstore in the age of iPads and Kindles.
"There are still a huge segment of our population who want to hold a book, they want to read a newspaper, they want that magazine in their hand," McDonald said.
McDonald opened Lake City Books one week ago. The motivation came to him after recovering from cancer.
"I was pretty lucky; I beat the odds and recently my doctors at Fitzpatrick Cancer Center told me it's probably time to start thinking about the future again," he said.
McDonald admits it will be tough to compete with national franchises, but he feels his business can still stand out.
"You know, I have some 25,000 volumes here in the store, and I think 95, 98 percent of the titles are books that the big stores will never have," he said.
If you're like me, you like mysteries, like "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." Well, Lake City Books has a huge selection of books and good coffee.
"Come on in, browse for some books, have some coffee and do some reading or if you need to do some work on your laptop, that's available also," McDonald said.
It appears residents of Plattsburgh are excited to have a new bookstore in their town.
"I'm a big reader, writer-reader. I'm into autobiographies, biographies, history," said Joseph Waterhouse of Plattsburgh.
A new chapter for McDonald and book lovers in Plattsburgh.
Lake City Books is located right in the Boynton Square shopping plaza in Plattsburgh.
