Possible plea deal in the works for alleged arsonist

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A plea deal may be in the works for the man who police say torched a Burlington bell tower.

The College Street Congregational Church was badly damaged back in October by a fire investigators say was arson.

32-year-old Aliaksandr Bychkou was arrested for the crime.

The Belarus national denied arson charges in court.

He was held for lack of $250,000 bail as he awaits trial.

But prosecutors confirmed "very preliminary discussions are taking place" between the defense and the state about a potential resolution in the case.

A status conference is scheduled for next week, and prosecutors say if a deal is reached by then it will be presented to the judge.
