Hannah Bielawski had a goal and set up two others in a four-goal third period barrage as Middlebury cruised past Castleton, 5-0, at Kenyon Arena Saturday afternoon. Madeline Marsh made 16 saves for the second-ranked Panthers (5-1) who bounced back from their lone loss of the season last Sunday to top-ranked Plattsburgh State. Castleton (6-4), who won at New England College last night, saw its three-game winning streak come to an end.
Leading 1-0 after two periods, Bielawski made it 2-0 4:23 into the third with her fourth of the year. She then assisted on goals by Emily Fluke at 6:07 and Julia Wardwell on the power play at 7:51. Jennifer Krakower closed the scoring with another power play tally at 11:16.
A strong Middlebury start with the first eight shots of the game led to Pam Schulman's first career goal at 4:24 when she knocked in Madeline Joyce's rebound. Victoria Laven also picked up an assist as her initial drive from the point was stopped before Joyce kept it alive for Schulman, who beat Paula Stephens from the right post.
Middlebury continued its attack in the second but Stephens stopped all eight shots including solid saves on Katie Sullivan and Micaela Thibault. The Panthers kept the 1-0 lead by killing a pair of penalties including one late in the stanza.
In her third start of the season, all in the last four games, Marsh earned her second shutout of the campaign with a nice glove save on Sabrina Hosmer early in the third and a goalmouth stop on Castleton's top scorer, Nicoline Jensen late in the contest.
In addition to Bielawski, Fluke added an assist with her goal. Middlebury went 2-4 with an extra skater and killed both of its penalties.
Much busier at the other end, Stephens finished with 30 saves for the Spartans who were outshot by the Panthers, 35-16.
Both teams will take a lengthy break for exams and the holidays. Middlebury will be back in action Saturday, January 4, 2014 hosting Elmira at 7:00 p.m. in a rematch of the 2013 NCAA D-III Championship game. Castleton next plays on January 7th when they host Potsdam in non-league action at Spartan Arena in Rutland.
