Shumlin says warnings about Vt. Health Connect never reached him

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Gov. Peter Shumlin says a May report indicating grave concern for the readiness of Vermont's health insurance exchange never landed on his desk.

A company tasked with reviewing Vermont Health Connect's development began issuing warnings about potential problems with the website's progress last spring. The reports noted that the issues should be brought to the attention of the highest levels of state government.

At a press conference Wednesday, Shumlin maintained that he did not hear significant concern about the website's readiness until after Labor Day.

"Governors don't read those reports. I don't have the time in the day to sit there and obviously wade through every single report when we're building one of the most complex websites that health care has ever integrated and delivered," said Shumlin, D-Vermont.

Shumlin says he relied on Vermont Health Connect's administrators for readiness updates and that requiring the reports allowed staff to address potential problems in a timely fashion.

He added that despite ongoing problems, Vermont's exchange is faring better than any other in the nation.
