A Newport man arrested after a standoff with police has been released from jail on a reduced bail.

Derick Niles stood on the roof of his home armed with a rifle in September in a standoff that lasted five hours. The incident was triggered when Niles phoned police claiming that his house was under siege.

A mental evaluation showed Niles was insane at the time of the incident.

He has been jailed for lack of bail ever since, but Wednesday, a judge lowered bail from $100,000 to $10,000 and Niles was released.

Prosecutors argued against the reduction in bail fearing another incident.
