Ski Vermont raising heating money for needy families

Posted: Updated:

Ski Vermont hopes you will help them keep Vermonters warm this winter.

Ski for Heat is a decades-old tradition at Nordic ski areas. People donate money and in exchange they get a free day pass. All the money goes straight to community action groups that help low-income families pay for heating fuel.

Ski Vermont says it is thrilled the Farmers' Almanac is calling for a cold winter, but they say it isn't great news for everyone. All 19 downhill resorts are joining the efforts and offering prizes for donations of certain amounts.

"We hope to raise $100,000. In the last 20 years they have raised $250,000, so this would be a major difference," said Sarah Wojcik of Ski Vermont.

All the money needs to be donated by Jan. 26.
