Vt. school property tax may go up more than expected

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

School property taxes may be going up even more than first expected.

The Vermont Department of Taxes warned lawmakers last month that they would need to raise the statewide property tax rate by 5 cents this coming year to meet rising school costs.

Friday, the tax commissioner amended that forecast, saying it will take an additional 2 cents.

Gov. Peter Shumlin, D-Vermont, has urged local school officials around the state to help control property taxes through their budgeting process.
