A panel reviewing the use of Tasers in Vermont following the death of Macadam Mason issued recommendations Friday.
Mason, who was a brain injury survivor, and was tased in the chest by a Vermont state trooper during a confrontation. The shock killed the Thetford man.
A subcommittee of the Law Enforcement Advisory Board took public comment Friday. An earlier draft policy drew criticism from members of the public and Vermont ACLU. They said it does not do enough to protect vulnerable populations.
The three-member group made a few changes following Friday's meeting, but said more may be coming when the full board reviews the issue later this month.
"I feel confident that this draft is a step in that direction. And again, it's very helpful to hear input from law enforcement, and the input from members of the public and from experts in the field to be able to supplement that for further consideration," said Cindy Maguire of the Law Enforcement Advisory Board.
Those who spoke Friday voiced a range of concerns, but a lack of Taser testing was the most common complaint.
ACLU representatives could not attend, but reiterated calls for significant revisions.
The board cannot unilaterally write police policy, but bills covering Taser use are expected to be debated when the Legislature reconvenes.
