BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Ike Azotam and Zaid Hearst each posted a double-double to lead the Quinnipiac Bobcats to an 80-67 victory over Vermont in non-conference men's basketball action at Patrick Gymnasium on Sunday. Quinnipiac improves to 6-2, while UVM falls to 3-7.

Azotam posted game-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds and Hearst added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Bobcats.

Brian Voelkel was four assists shy of a triple-double to lead Vermont. He was one of four Catamounts in double figures with 12 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and handed out six assists. Sandro Carissimo was the high scorer for UVM, netting 13 points, 11 in the second half.

Vermont scored the first four points of the game, but that would be the only lead for the Catamounts. UVM trailed 17-16 at the 10:13 mark of the first half. Quinnipiac opened up a double-digit lead behind a 16-7 run, fueled by eight points from Umar Shannon, to make the score 33-23, with 3:18 remaining in the half. The Bobcats would extend the lead to 15 as the teams headed into halftime.

The Catamounts closed to within eight on a layup by Hector Harold at the 11:51 mark of the second half but that was as close as Vermont could get the rest of the way. Quinnipiac used a 9-2 spurt to move out to a 15-point advantage, its largest of the game, at the 8:32 mark and maintained the double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Quinnipiac finished the day shooting 50 percent from the field and went 25-for-27 from the foul line. The Catamounts shot 42.4 percent from the floor. The Bobcats, who entered the game ranked third in the country in rebounding, out rebounded Vermont 41-26 in the contest.

Vermont returns to action on Wednesday (Dec. 18) when it opens up America East Conference play at league newcomer UMass Lowell. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Costello Athletic Center.
