Kayla Burchill scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Vermont Catamounts to a 74-51 victory over Canisius in non-conference women's basketball action at Patrick Gymnasium on Monday. Vermont moves to 4-5 overall, while Canisius falls to 4-5 on the season.
Burchill scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half as the Catamounts used a 23-0 run to open up a four-point game and went 9-for-12 from 3-point range. Vermont led 10-6 at the 14:15 mark and eight minutes later the Catamounts held a 33-6 advantage following the offensive outburst, which was fueled by 11 points from Burchill.
Vermont went into the locker room leading 46-22. The Catamounts shot 57.7 percent from the floor and 75 percent from beyond the arc. Canisius was limited to 33 percent shooting from the field.
The Catamounts maintained the large lead throughout the second half, extending it to 30 points at times.
Kaylea Britton added 11 points off the bench and Niki Taylor chipped in 10 points and five rebounds to round out the leading scorers for Vermont.
Jamie Ruttle paced the Golden Griffins with 14 points and six rebounds.
Vermont returns to action on Dec. 20-21 at the Christmas City Classic hosted by Lehigh University. The Catamounts will take on the hosts on Friday (Dec. 20) at 5 p.m. and face either Youngstown State or Delaware in the consolation or championship game at 2 p.m. or 4 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 21).
