RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - A witness in the Vermont trial of a man convicted of causing a woman's death over drugs has been sentenced to seven years in prison as part of a plea deal with prosecutors.
The Rutland Herald reports Joshua Makhanda-Lopez was sentenced Monday in federal court on drug and gun charges. He testified against Frank Caraballo in the 2011 death of Melissa Barratt.
Makhanda-Lopez testified he was a driver for Caraballo, who was selling drugs in the Brattleboro area. He said Barratt stole $10,000 worth of drugs from Caraballo, so he helped him find her and bring her to some woods before loading the gun Caraballo used to kill her.
Caraballo awaits sentencing; he's appealing his October murder conviction. He's serving a 16-year sentence on unrelated drug charges.
