Dozens arrested in North Country drug sweep

Posted: Updated:
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -

"This investigation is an example of the challenges faced by law enforcement in the North Country, who are combating the ever-changing drugs that local and outside drug dealers sell in our community," Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie said.

The largest drug bust ever in the North Country was due to the efforts of the Adirondack Drug Task Force, made up of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Over the last two weeks, police have arrested 52 of the 61 suspects charged, as well as seizing evidence such as cocaine, heroin, a handgun and more than $20,000.

"A vehicle that was seized during the course of this investigation had a very sophisticated hidden compartment under the passenger seat that was electronically operated," said James Burns of the DEA.

The investigation began in October 2012, ending in 61 individuals being indicted. But police say, the job is far from over.

"We have strong law enforcement presence in this area and we are aggressively pursuing it and we are dedicating whatever resources we have available to make sure they are investigated," N.Y. State Police Capt. Robert LaFountain said.

Of the 61 defendants charged with the sale and possession of drugs:

  • 28 are charged with heroin
  • 15 caught with cocaine
  • 16 with prescription medications
  • And 2 defendants with methamphetamine

And six of the 61 suspects were enrolled at Plattsburgh State University at the time of their arrest.

"University Police has assisted and will continue to assist the drug task force and the every agency in this county in any way that we can," SUNY Plattsburgh Police Chief Arlene Sabo said.

Sentences the suspects face depend on the level of crimes with which they are charged and their criminal history.
