The Brattleboro Retreat is going through some changes that are creating controversy.
The psychiatric hospital has 120 patient beds. It has started focusing on niches in care, including a new unit for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender patients.
Meanwhile, the center has had serious problems. The Retreat was cited for violations after a patient's overdose death last year. And in September of this year, a patient was found dead in a bathroom of a Retreat-run residence hall. Staff didn't discover her body for two days. The Retreat is also now caring for some state patients after Tropical Storm Irene forced the closure of the state hospital.
At this pivotal time Ken Picard with Seven Days visited the Brattleboro Retreat for an update. Watch the video for more.
