Brewery on tap at old St. Albans bowling alley

Posted: Updated:

An empty storefront in St. Albans will become a new adventure for another business in town.

The old 18-lane bowling alley on Main Street is in the process of becoming a new home base for 14th Star Brewing Company. The company was created by a Vermont soldier, but has outgrown its original location.

Now, 14th Star will expand to meet new demand for beer beyond Franklin County. Its new landlord says he's thrilled to fill the space with a new draw for the downtown marketplace.

"He could not stay here and make any money. He needs to move on and maybe in 10 years from today that place would be too small," landlord Tony Pomerleau said.

"This place started a few years ago as a dream when we were in Afghanistan. We were writing the business plan in the back of the notebook just to pass the time, thinking about the day we could actually retire from the Army," said Steve Gagner of 14th Star Brewing Co.

Gagner says he hopes his company serves as a destination to help grow the downtown economy in St. Albans. Pomerleau is helping with a discounted rent for the first two years.
