For Kyle Yandow, 43, the trip home for the holidays ended in a St. Albans courtroom. Friday, he denied allegations that he stole a car, committed retail theft, fled from officers and resisted arrest. His daughter, Harley Yandow, 21, faces similar charges in Chittenden County. Her 18-year-old brother, Gunnar, has not been charged... yet.

The investigation into the family began at the Tractor Supply Company in Swanton. The Yandows allegedly walked out with a shopping cart's-worth of goods.

But a day later an off-duty trooper spotted the getaway car, later determined to be stolen in Arizona, where Kyle and Harley have been living.

"Mr. Yandow decided to run away, start the car and take off on the trooper, but as he learned, you can't outrun a radio," Franklin County Prosecutor Jim Hughes said.

Police say Yandow sped through residential neighborhoods, reaching 90 mph, until six troopers intercepted them. Investigators found the stolen merchandise inside the car, but they never expected what they found in the trunk: a power gas siphoning device feeding two 20-gallon drums.

"Although there's no charge pending for this yet, that Mr. Yandow would park over a quick stop gas tank where the trucks would fill the underground tank... lower the hose into the tank," Hughes said. "It's new and pretty ingenious."

But a warning to anyone considering copying the idea: Hughes is sharing the word about the new technique with other jurisdictions. If ending up on Santa's naughty list wasn't enough of a deterrent, a mug shot Christmas card might be.

Kyle Yandow has not been charged for gas theft as investigators work to determine when and where he drained gas stations. His son, Gunnar, will have his first court appearance Monday.
