FDA agrees to change new food safety laws

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The Food and Drug Administration has agreed to make changes in new food safety laws in response to complaints from Vermont food producers.

Congress passed the Food Safety Modernization Act to help reduce outbreaks of foodborne illnesses caused by improper handling and processing of fresh foods. But the specific regulations for the law announced this past summer by the FDA brought cries of protests from small food producers. They worried that higher standards for things like water quality and manure usage, and even added paperwork would be cost prohibitive.

The FDA has now informed Vermont's Congressional delegation that they will rewrite the rules and take additional public input.
