Fletcher Free Library celebrates the winter solstice

Posted: Updated:

Today is the winter solstice, the shortest day and the longest night of the year.

Some children were spending the day inside the Fletcher Free Library in Burlington making "stained glass" candles to celebrate the solstice.

Library officials say they organize projects for children around this time of year that make great gifts, help them learn about the weather, and teach important skills.

"The motor skills obviously involved in using the brushes and glue and paste and things and you know, learning about colors and how they interact with each other," says Youth Services Assistant Christine Demarais.

The children got to finish up their art projects, but the Fletcher Free Library was preparing to close three hours early because of the weather.
