Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy plans take on NSA privacy abuses early next year.
Leahy's Judiciary Committee will hold hearings January 14th on the results of a presidential task force's report on NSA spying. Leahy, speaking Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press, said the issue goes well beyond the revelations leaked by Edward Snowden.
"It's not about Snowden -- in a way he's irrelevant on this -- it's a question of how well this has been looked at and how much the American public knows about it," Leahy said.
In a statement Leahy said a number of provisions in the presidential report are included in his USA Freedom Act, including ending the bulk collection of phone records.
