FORT EDWARD, N.Y. (AP) - A 14-year-old boy has been sentenced to probation for fatally shooting his teenage friend in the victim's upstate New York home last year.

Local media report that the 14-year-old from Hudson Falls was sentenced Monday in Washington County Family Court to 17 months of probation for the fatal shooting in Fort Edward in June 2012.

Police say the teen was handling a shotgun when it went off, shooting 13-year-old Gary Cota in the head. Authorities say the two boys were alone in Cota's bedroom when the shooting occurred

The 14-year-old, whose name hasn't been released because of his age, pleaded guilty last month to criminally negligent homicide

Cota owned the gun. His parents were charged with child neglect for not securing the weapon. They pleaded guilty and were sentenced to probation.
