Vt. state police cruiser rolls on Interstate 89

WILLISTON, Vt. -

Slippery roads sent a Vermont State Police cruiser rolling off Interstate 89 Thursday morning.

Police say Trooper Ben Katz was headed south just north of Exit 12 in Williston at about 8:40 a.m. when his cruiser went off the road, rolled, and landed on its wheels in the median.

Katz, 33, was able to contact dispatch for help. Police say he was taken to the hospital to be evaluated as a precaution. He was wearing his seat belt.

Katz was on regular patrol when he crashed. Police say there was significant icing on the highway at the time. And they say witnesses said Katz was traveling below the posted speed limit. The crash is under investigation, but police say it appears road conditions were a contributing factor.

The cruiser was towed away.

Katz is a 10-year veteran of the state police.

Vermont state police remind all motorists to use caution during winter road conditions.
