BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. (AP) - An organization created to help disadvantaged youth and adults in Bellows Falls, Vt., is celebrating the first recipient of its "earn-a-bike" program and two grants that will help it grow.
The BF Community Bike Project was created last summer to teach bike skills to low-income children and adults, spread awareness of bicycle safety and collaborate with local schools on bicycle-related events. There's also an effort known as Upcycled Goods, which involves creating new objects from leftover bicycle parts.
The Brattleboro Reformer reports that a Bellows Falls Middle School student recently took home a bike he earned by putting in five volunteer hours fixing it up. And the project recently received a $5,000 grant from the Windham Foundation and $1,075 from the Vermont Community Foundation.
