Police respond to 'situation' in Westford

Posted: Updated:
WESTFORD, Vt. -

Vermont State Police closed off a road in Westford and called in a tactical unit after shots were fired during what they're categorizing as a family disturbance.

Police say the 911 call came in around 8:30 p.m. Monday. A woman in a house on Old Stage Road called them.

Troopers say when they arrived they heard multiple gunshots and were not able to make contact with the woman who made the call about her husband.

Eventually, they were able to re-establish contact with the couple.

However, police were cautious.

"You don't want to send troopers to a residence after receiving a 911 call and not being able to make contact, because you don't know what's going on inside the house," said Lt. Matthew Birmingham. "So when you get there and there are gun shots... it makes it that much more dangerous for them. So for their safety, and the safety of everyone in that neighborhood we wanted to make sure we handled it correctly."

Police say that the husband fired multiple gunshots off his back porch. However, no one was injured.

Mental health professionals were also called in.

No charges have been filed.
