Fire tears through Shoreham barn

Posted: Updated:

Fire tore through a big barn in Shoreham Tuesday. The blaze broke out at the Peaceable Hill Pheasant Preserve on Burgess Road.

Firefighters from Whiting, Orwell, Bridport and Shoreham fought the flames in 12-degree temperatures. They stopped the fire from spreading to other out-buildings and the house. The barn is a total loss.

"Water supply is always a challenge on these long, narrow driveways; it's an issue. We did good with 4-inch lines from the main road in. Water supply wasn't the issue, it's just the fact that it was fully involved upon arrival," Shoreham Fire Chief Jeff Treadway said.

Owner Glen Symon tells WCAX News there were more than 125 ring-tailed pheasants in the barn. Peaceable Hill is a private hunting preserve and hatchery for the birds.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
